  1. Welcome to ArcDIB version 2.0
  2.  
  3. This file contains a brief summary of the what is contained
  4. in this release along with information to help you get started.
  5.  
  6. ArcDIB is an "image"-based database that allows you to easily 
  7. collect and organize image data from various sources and in serveral 
  8. different formats. 
  9.  
  10. Version 2.0 includes:
  11.  
  12. - Enhanced JPEG support (8 and 24-bit color)
  13. - Background compression operation
  14. - Improved compression performance
  15. - Support for Microsoft Video for Windows (.AVI) files
  16. - Allows sound (.WAV) files to be attached to each image
  17. - Support for OLE (as a client)
  18. - Improved print functions
  19. - Image manipulation functions
  20. - Thumbnail image listbox

  34. INSTALLATION 
  35.  
  36. Just make sure that the files listed at the end of this file are
  37. contained in the same directory such as C:\ARCDIB
  38.  
  39. NOTE: If you register ArcDIB, you will receive (among other things)
  40.       an installation program which comes with the runtime version
  41.       of Microsoft Video for Windows.
  42.  
  43. RUNNING
  44.  
  45. Once installation is complete, you are ready to run ArcDIB. 
  46. The main window consists of little more than a pulldown menu. 
  47. Select the Files/Open menu item and open up the SAMPLE.BIF 
  48. file to see an example of the type of data ArcDIB is capable of managing.
  49.  
  50. ArcDIB is capable of playing Microsoft Video for Windows (MVW) files. 
  51. These files must have a .AVI extension (the default) in order to be
  52. recognized by ArcDIB. You must also have some version of MVW already
  53. installed in order to play .AVI files (see installation NOTE above).

  55. You may also record and play sound (.WAV) files and attach them to 
  56. any image object. This means that you must have some type of sound
  57. driver installed which makes Windows capable of doing this. A good
  58. example is the Sound Blaster Card which comes with the necessary 
  59. drivers. There are also some software only emulators which at least
  60. let you playback prerecorded sound. The example database (SAMPLE.BIF)
  61. has an image with sound attached (EMILY.BMP).

  63. The best way to become familiar with ArcDIB is to play with the SAMPLE.BIF
  64. file. It contains an example of just about every type of image object
  65. that ArcDIB supports. Then create your own (or add to SAMPLE) and see
  66. the variety of image formats ArcDIB can handle.

  68. NOTE: Because ArcDIB can now handle video and OLE entities, the term
  69.       "image object" is used to denote an entry in the database. The
  70.       term "image format" refers to the conventional notion of graphics
  71.       standards such as PCX, BMP, etc.

  75. The documention for ArcDIB consists of the Help File. Press F1 at 
  76. any time during the execution of the program to get context-sensitive 
  77. information.
